Flexible seating increases student engagement by allowing them to have a choice in what type of seat they use, provide comfortable learning spaces, and let students get up and move around. Research shows that the move to more flexible seating is grounded in research that shows gains in student health and classroom engagement.
Since my classroom contains students with various learning styles, I want to provide them with many seating options that will meet their needs. In addition to traditional desks and tables, I intend to include standing tables, wobble cushions for floor seating, exercise balls with feet, wobble stools, fidget bands, and comfortable lounge seating.
There are specific ways that these items will impact our classroom. Sometimes, students with ADHD struggle with sitting still; if I could offer them a wobble stool or a fidget band for their feet, I would be able to meet their needs and provide them with a space where they could be their best self and do their best work. When you walk into a Starbucks or the Google corporate offices, you see comfortable seating. I would like to offer just that because research shows quality seating helps boost productivity. By moving towards a flexible seating classroom environment, I am also going to provide carpet area for direct instruction. Upon completion of my lessons, students will retreat back to their flexible seating option.
