A cajon is a is a box-shaped percussion instrument originally from Peru, played by slapping the front or rear faces (generally thin plywood) with the hands, fingers, or sometimes implements such as brushes, mallets, or sticks. (Definition copied from Wikipedia) It is a great alternative to a drum because it's portable, easy to learn, and relatively inexpensive. A classroom cajon is actually 8 individual cajons linked together on a table.
A classroom cajon will allow 8 students to play together and practice making sound at the same time as everyone else, helping to reinforce cooperation and giving a better internal understanding of steady beat. Students will also be able to remove the 8 cajons and play them individually in other areas of the classroom. We'll be playing music together sooner, and have more time for fun!
