I am choosing The Joy Luck Club for my 9th graders because it has so much to relate to. The interactions between generations, mothers and daughters; and I also like to expose them to differences in culture.
I like to choose books that also have movies; not only as a motivator but also to help with compare/contrast skills and visualization.
We read together as a class. This book will be excellent as it will provide them with opportunities to explore family dynamics in different cultures, it will also provide us with an opportunity to incorporate some history into our lesson.
