The purpose of this project is to increase second language acquisition through FVR (free voluntary reading). As a Comprehensible Input trained teacher I have learned about the importance of reading in a second language and language proficiency. My hope is to build and increase my classroom library so that there are a variety of books that are accessible for all student levels and interests..
By having a classroom library of high-interest and comprehensible novels, of various levels, students will have the freedom to choose from a variety of texts that interest them at their ability level.
Here are the benefits that this project will have on my students. Research shows that “…recreational reading in a second language is a powerful means of improving grammar, vocabulary, spelling and writing ability – and it is far more efficient and far more pleasant that traditional instruction… 70% of our language comes from reading- in order for students to acquire language, they must read.” - Stephen Krashen, PHD, expert in the field of linguistics, specializing in theories of language acquisition and development
My goal, as a language teacher, is to increase proficiency in the second language. By having a variety of comprehensible and high interest novels in the class, the students will be more interested and engaged in their recreational reading. Krashen indicates the necessity of a print-rich environment that provides authentic literature to assist in educating students to read with understanding in second language acquisition.
