Flexible seating aids in creating community, collaboration, and engagement. Students gain a sense of well-being by having some control of their surroundings. In a flexible seating classroom, students are allowed to sit in a place that works best for them. If they want to move from a tall standing desk to a cushion on the floor they are free to do so. By empowering students with choices of where to sit and whom to work with students take ownership of the decisions they make. We need stability balls, wobbly seats, rocking stools and cushions for our flexible seating classroom.
Classroom design can effect how students engage, participate and stay involved in their learning. When classrooms are designed to allow students to actively participate in their learning student engagement increases. In addition, when students are comfortable they can stay calm, focused and productive. When students are free to move around oxygen can flow freely to their brain and students can say alert and focused.
