These books will be cherished by children who do not have access to these types of item at home. Each year, for the holidays I try to provide books that they can keep that will remind them of the classroom we have created and the love of learning they have cultivated in kindergarten.
This book is my favorite to gift, because it talks about friendship and adversity. It is heartwarming, and reminds students that relationships, specifically friendships impact success. It emphasizes selflessness and compassion and teaches students to demonstrate those qualities in all their interactions.
I use this tool to discuss how we interact in our classroom community. I emphasize the importance of building each other up and that helping others in one of the greatest gifts we can give of ourselves. This is used for literacy, but I think the message is so much larger than that. It is an essential skill I hope my students will carry with them for the rest of their lives.
