I borrowed a class set of the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio and used it for the first time in my 5th grade classroom last year. I initially chose it to teach state standards that would show student understanding of character, conflict, and theme. What my students received from reading the book was more than just an understanding of the standards, but they gained a better understanding of empathy and an amazing grasp of challenges that can derail your life if you let it. The main character is visibly handicapped but in no way impaired. It is a beautiful story with a beautiful lesson and my students will never forget it!
