These materials will expose my students to different types of genres. My hope is the more my students read, the more they will foster a genuine love for reading. They will discover new adventures within each new book.
Students will be exposed to a folktale from China through Minli's journeys in the valley of Fruitless mountain. Minli is a young girl named who lives in a run-down hut with her parents. In the evenings, her father entertained her with old folktales of the Jade Dragon and the Old Man on the Moon, who knows the answers to all of life's questions. While reading this book, students will engage their imaginations as they travel through Minli's world.
Students will enjoy fantasy/fiction tale of a gifted girl, with the love of reading, who is forced to put up with a crude, distant father and mother. All the while, Agatha Trunchbull, the evil principal at Matilda's school, is a terrifyingly strict bully. However, when Matilda learns she has the power of telekinesis, she begins to defend her friends from the Trunchbull's wrath and fight back against her unkind parents. By reading this book, my hope is that my students will cultivate a love of reading just like Matilda.
My students need a class set of Where the Mountain Meets the Moon and Matilda in order to foster their love of reading!
