Time and time again, I see students get frustrated as they learn the intricacies of multiplying and dividing long digit numbers and erase and re-erase their calculations using the traditional paper and pencil.
Providing a white board table, especially for those that are hyper-critical of their math processes, will allow students the opportunity to easily correct mistakes on the fly which helps build self-esteem and gives exceptional students the opportunity to represent math problems in multiple ways on a mistake-friendly surface.
After all, mistakes are learning opportunities, and my dream as a teacher is to have positive, growth-minded feelings connected to these mistakes.
