I strive to create a culturally responsive and sensitive environment for all learners. By diversifying my library, students will have the opportunity to read books with main characters that look like them and have similar experiences. Some fiction books with main characters of color include Patina, The Dreamer, Saint Louis Armstrong Beach, The Sweetest Sound, The Serpent's Secret, President of the 5th Grade and The Girl Who Drank the Moon. Nonfiction books are important for students to connect with characters as well as books such as Becoming Kareem, The Radiant Child, and I am Malala. This allows children to see themselves in books and want to read more! The noise canceling headphones will help my students with IEPs and sensory sensitivity stay focused while reading. Flexible seating with the picnic chairs provides students the option to recline on the floor while reading. This increases comfort and reading engagement. My goal of diversifying my library is to represent my students' cultures and passions as well as build empathy, perspective-taking, active listening, and a conscious awareness of differences. Not only will students grow in the love of reading, they will grow into socially responsible people.
