Bringing in this novel will allow students in 11th grade language arts to experience a broader range of voices in early American Literature, by offering up a slave narrative written by a woman.
Contrasted to the predominantly white male voices they encounter in this course, this will broaden their understanding of the early American experience.
Harriet Jacobs recollections of her experience as a slave published just prior to the Civil War allows students to see slavery through a new and divergent perspective. This also allows all students to see slavery through a lens other than the statistical one presented through traditional history textbooks allowing them to build empathy through a more personal, feminine, and frequently unheard voice. It also allows for students to examine authors' purpose through a text where the author is clear in her intent.
