My students as well as the entire school of 500+ kids are participating in school clubs this year. Students are able to choose the club they want to participate in based on their individual interests. I am starting a gardening club. The benefits of participating in clubs are numerous. Students are able to make new friends who have similar interests, build respect, and learn team work, which is a very important life skill, as well as gain self-confidence.
Students will learn how different plants grow, about ecosystems, photosynthesis, and the scientific method in a club setting. As weather permits, teachers will teach these units in the garden to create a hands-on learning experience. Our garden club will integrate these science lessons as we meet every other week for 45 minutes. The funds will be used to buy potting soil, fertilizer, pots, labels, hoses, seeds, gardening tools, and gloves.
