The current desk chairs in my classroom are uncomfortable and constraining for many students, especially those with special needs. Some students have difficulty getting in and out of them. Also, they are not ideal workspaces for scientific collaboration since rearranging them results in finger pinches and shared work surfaces that are angled and uneven.
The requested standing work table will allow students to simultaneously stand, move, and learn productively in groups on a flat shared workspace that doubles as a whiteboard for brainstorming and planning.
I work hard to provide academic variety and choice to engage students in class content, but the physical space is limiting and restrictive for students who need to be in motion to maintain attention and work effectively. Trading some traditional desks out for an 8-student standing table will provide the needed variety and choice in work space for students who need it.
