When I first announced I would be teaching cooking as an elective, students were approaching me with a million questions. The interest was so high that 71 students signed up for a class that maxed at 28. Needless to say, the class is a hit!
Middles schoolers are craving opportunities to work with their hands, explore flavors, learn recipes, and navigate the kitchen--they want to eat!This is a time in their lives when they carve out their independence. Building salads, constructing crostinis, and planning menus are lifelong skills. Young people are learning how to cook and learning how to eat in an ever-increasing world of fast food and delivery services.
We begin the trimester learning safe knife skills. If you have ever worked at all in your life, you know how difficult it can be to do a job with the wrong tool. The same applies to the kitchen--students need the proper knives to continue to be safe and to be able to be the best chefs they can be.
