My class includes both enthusiastic readers and reluctant readers. Each of my students is unique. Our library is small, and the selection is limited. I want my students to have a choice in what they read, to be introduced to new authors, and to "escape" into a book.
Reading is a lifelong skill, and we want students to develop a joy for reading and to become lifelong readers. Having a choice encourages students to "try books on." They are able to find books that appeal to them on a personal level and fit their interests.
The books in my project will help students explore history, relate to the writer of a memoir, experience empathy and understanding, and appreciate storytelling at its best. I wanted books that would appeal to over 100 students-books of adventure, perseverance, strength, kindness, courage, success and even failure. Our students learn about life through books, and books offer them a way to escape into a world of imagination and what ifs.
