I am starting my very first year as a Library Media Specialist in a kindergarten through fifth grade elementary school that has a skills linked class. 60% of my students receive free or reduced lunch, and over 40% of my students have learned English as a second language. My goal is to collect flexible seating items to help make the library media center an inviting place where ALL students can feel like they belong while they go on adventures and create their own as writers!
The library media center should be an area where kids can create, become critical thinkers, researchers, and problem solvers.
The flexible seating options, as well as the technology I am asking for will help to create experiences that many of my students have never experienced. The balancing chairs and foam pads will help students feel comfortable, safe, and focused. The television can be used as a green screen for projects and help kids with their speaking and listening skills. I am asking for the television because the one we currently have is from the 1990s and is screwed into the wall. It is bulky and barely works, but it is the only television that has cable access. I also want to open up the media center as a safe space where families can get information and access to experiences as well.
