Flexible seating allows each child to take charge of their learning space. The child chooses an area in the room that is conducive to their learning style and comfort. Children are allowed to choose a space to complete their independent work, guided reading/math work, and reading/math centers. Research shows that children that are given a choice of where they sit and are comfortable, are motivated to learn. Children that are comfortable doing their work and are provided with a choice are more actively engaged, less disruptive, and complete more work.
I have chosen seating options with my students in mind. The flex-space balance balls will allow my students to sit around the table with me during guided reading and math, all while allowing them the opportunity to release some extra energy. The comfy floor seats provide a cushioned bottom and back allowing for the utmost comfort for those who choose to work on the floor. The comfy couch will be a huge asset to our classroom. Multiple students will be able to use the couch to complete work. I have clipboards and lap desks that will provide a working surface while relaxing on the couch. The bean bag chairs will provide additional, comfortable seating that is lightweight and portable. These can be moved to various places within the classroom as needed. I am so excited about providing my students with comfort beyond a hard desk that their little legs are too short for and left dangling all day.
