The time that is spent in the mornings before the school day officially begins differs greatly from student to student. Some students arrive early, some arrive late. Some students are ready for the day quickly, others take longer to get prepared. Some students are bright eyed, and some are still sleepy! Although students arrive to school at a variety of times and in different moods, often times they are each expected to complete the same task before the bell (i.e. a "morning work" worksheet) regardless of their situation or arrival time that morning. To me, this work often feels forced, rushed, and often does not produce accurate or necessary data for me to drive my instruction. It is my intention to make this time of our day more meaningful to my students through purpose and engagement.
Through the implementation of Morning Choice Tubs, students will have access to a variety of hands-on manipulatives and activities which they will use to start their day through exploring, creating, collaborating, problem solving, and thinking outside-the-box. This type of play-based learning and exploration will create an impact on my students' learning and successes in all areas, including problem solving, math connections, language arts connections, and social skills.
With your help, my students will have a chance to build, create, and problem solve through the use of Legos, gears, Play-Doh, magnets, etc. They will make math connections through the use of Geoboards and number-based games. Language arts connections will be made through the use of Bananagrams and story cubes. Regardless of what a student chooses, each tub will provide my students with a chance for choice, collaboration, and problem solving! What a great way to start each day!
