As a Humanities teacher in an urban New York public school that serves students in grades 6-12, it is my hope to challenge students to more fully recognize the power of the written word. Humanities integrates English Language Arts and Social Studies. My 7th and 8th grade students, who represent diverse racial groups and who largely come from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds, have already begun to develop an appreciation for reading (thanks to a school-wide initiative to encourage students to read independently). However, many of them have yet to develop the crucial comprehension skills needed to unpack more sophisticated texts.
