Our 6th grade math and global studies teachers collaborated this past year to teach an International Baccalaureate unit on the global need for affordable housing for refugees. We had such amazing success and our students were so engaged that we are teaching this unit again! Each of these books will take the students on a different journey to a different country.
These new books will allow students to have an increased awareness and desire to tackle the need for housing for people in countries like Afghanistan, Iran, Congo, and Somalia.
The books requested are amazing for my English language learners. In addition to an engaging text, these books support my students with visuals like graphs, maps, and illustrations. The Leaving my Homeland Series also has a rich vocabulary, which can be hard for my readers. This series does a fabulous job of breaking down the words and gives plenty of context clues to help students with vocabulary words.
My students will be able to not only gain a deep understanding of why refugees seek safety in other countries, but will also find connections between these stories and their own family's history. I know that my students will engage in deep and meaningful conversations around each book. They will fulfill a missing component in our Global Studies library.
Thank you for considering donating to our project!
