Teaching and living in a small rural southern town, it is very difficult for my economically challenged students to understand the way the world works, and the reasons things happen as they do. The thirst for the experience we describe, to feel what the history feels, is a physical ache for many. By reading historical accounts (even fictional ones), students can truly step back in time and see history happening while using critical thinking skills to decipher the ultimate meaning. When they read, they experience empathetic feelings and put themselves in the character's shoes, living it mentally and applying it daily.
