Maya Angelou said it best when she said, 鈥淚n diversity, there is beauty and there is strength.鈥
As a teacher in a diverse community, my goal is to fill my classroom library with books that reflect the faces and the voices of my students. It is important for students to see themselves represented in books and to hear stories from backgrounds different from their own. Why? Because when students see themselves in books, they grow to love and appreciate their cultures, and more importantly, gain confidence in themselves. When students hear stories about the lives of others, they learn to respect and empathize. Stories become a source of strength 鈥 allowing students to think and feel deeply.
For distance learning, I plan on recording read aloud videos and sharing them with my students through Google Classroom. I will use the books to engage in discussions with students about race, acceptance, kindness, resilience and so much more.
