My second grade students are quite eager to read new books. They enter the classroom wanting to trade books from our classroom library but limited resources can make this very difficult. The books requested for this project will give students an opportunity to choose books to read at school and at home. These books will be placed in special "book bags" that can travel from school to home with the opportunity to get a new book bag each week. Games and activities that correlate with each set of books will encourage families to spend time together while strengthening reading skills.
By being able to choose books based on personal interest, the students will be able to read for enjoyment and develop a true love for reading. This will give them a strong sense of ownership when reading instead of just another task required by the teacher.
Reading should be an experience where the imagination can create fantastical places, new and exciting characters are met, and newly learned information can spark a curiosity for knowledge!
