I will be implementing guided reading strategies with my students in the upcoming year. Guided Reading has proven to develop strong readers as individuals who know they have teacher support and scaffolding as needed. By working together to dissect a text, they will have a better understanding of the deeper comprehension skills that come with being a good reader. We will work in whole group to complete an anchor chart about the text with special focus on the comprehension skill of the week - ie sequence, cause and effect, problem and solution, or author's purpose. By having this chart on an easel, we will have the option to move it around the classroom as needed.
Small Group time is where they will really be able to shine as individuals. This is where we will utilize the tabletop pocket chart, sentence strips, and page pocket sleeves to further practice and develop their comprehension skills. This small group environment is where even the most quiet or shy students have the opportunity to feel safe and confident to share their ideas.
