With the addition of a rotational block that includes time for independent reading, I am very excited to add more contemporary authors to my classroom library. I want students to truly benefit from the idea of reader's choice, and in order to do so, I want to begin to diversify my classroom collection of reading material. It is rare to have time built into a high school schedule for silent, sustained reading, but as we work toward continued increase in reading fluency and comprehension, this time has proven effective, and most importantly, our students enjoy the liberty of picking up a text that they chose to read. There is nothing like discovering the joy of reading that comes from reading texts that are relevant to experience and that allow us to extend understanding beyond the page. I have no doubt that my students will continue to enjoy many of the classic texts already available in our library, but I look forward to expanding their selection.
