My 4th grade students are in short supply of excellent literature, currently we have missing and tattered pages in the books we have access to at our school. My students have shown an astonishing interest in reading, and this project will not only help enrich their experiences with the printed word but having access to quality literature will help them reach our goal of becoming better readers.
Studies show that the best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books like Esperanza Rising or Bud, Not Buddy will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. In addition, our districts' focus is on producing quality writers as well as good readers. Well-written literature helps give students well-crafted examples of what excellent writing looks like. Not only having access to great literature, my students would benefit by having the use of a color printer to print out their work. The students can print their writing pieces to display in our print-rich classroom. A sense of pride and accomplishment will be quite apparent in their faces as they see their work published and put up on display.
