To begin the school year, I am hoping to acquire a class set of the novel, Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan. With this text, we will start out the year with a community building literature study. All reading the same novel, we review reading strategies they have learned in the past, build confidence and community, and discuss new 5th grade expectations. Additionally, I am looking to build a young adult fiction library that students have access to within the class. They may also check out these books to take reading outside school.
All students should have access to high-interest, high-quality texts. Rudolfo Anaya is one of the most prominent authors from New Mexico and our elementary school is named after this inspirational individual. I hope to provide further access of literature and non-fiction texts to the students of RAE. Literature to inspire and motivate students can aid in building community, character and confidence.
Both the class set and the assortment of books will be for the benefit of so many students in the future. Also, students will have the opportunity to help inventory books, operate a check-out system and most of all, read books they are interested in!
