We are in need of a variety of books. Each week I begin with a read aloud so that students have an opportunity to hear voice/inflection, fluency, and for pleasure. Next, we utilize a sentence from the text to notice things like structure, figurative language, punctuation etc. On day two, students rewrite the sentence exactly as written and identify the eight parts of speech in their Mentor Text notebooks. As a class students are called upon to come to the board and label the parts of speech they have identified. We continue until all words are labeled or as many they can. Day three they rewrite the sentence adding or changing adjectives, nouns, etc. to enhance the sentence without changing the meaning. Day four they are asked to come up with their own sentence using the structure of the mentor sentence. On Friday, they are given a quick assessment.
