These materials will enable my students to design a full color tessellation tile that draws on our knowledge of polygon geometry. Students will create, measure, and analyze their individual tiles and piece them together with classmates to understand how to build a larger geometric pattern.
Students will use their math analysis skills to calculate the area of each polygon in their design, while utilizing their artistry to select complementary color schemes and build a class wide mural.
We will discuss how essential measurement skills are to artistic traditions of the world, including beadwork in Indigenous communities of North America, and tile work in the Moorish temples of Spain - both of which highlight patterns and community cooperation.
