Having flexible seating options in our classroom will help the students in so many ways. Since they are learning in second language, it is easy to get distracted and lose focus. Sitting on a hard plastic chair and at a desk just doesn't work for everyone (not even adults!). How often is a child tipping back on a chair only to have the teacher tell them to "sit correctly" in the chair? It is obvious that the chairs are uncomfortable and the kids need some movement. The balance balls and wobble cushions allow students to move around and not have to sit still. Kids just aren't ready to sit still for 6 1/2 hours a day! Not only will it help with focus, but it gives the student a sense of independence in that they get to to choose their own seat, where they will be most successful for the day. Since most of the work we do in our classroom is project based, students will be able to easily collaborate in their groups with the flexible seating options. They can move to different areas of the classroom to sit where their group will work the best.
