The instructional practice of having every student read the same teacher-selected book regardless of individual reading interest and level is gone—thankfully! After watching my own kids learn to read, the importance of choice and embracing the reading process rather then struggling through it became ever apparent. I had success teaching through the books I selected or were assigned. I created exciting lessons and showered each novel with (sometimes manufactured) admiration. And, although I think my students bought into my teaching to a certain extent, I taught them to love a particular book, not to love to read.
Reading is an open door to education, opportunity, self-esteem, travel, success, understanding, empathy, compassion and so much more—and it can only happen through a book. Being empowered to make personal and meaningful choices when reading is only half the battle. That’s why I need you! My students need a library of books to choose from at their finger tips, so they are able to not only fall in love with a book, but fall in love with reading.
