Building strong literacy skills at a young age is crucial for students of all developmental stages. Strong reading skills form the basis for learning in all subject areas. At this age it is very important that activities to teach literacy skills are hands-on so that children are actively engaged.
The skills I teach at the beginning of the school year prepare my students to read. I have selected reading materials that will reinforce the skills we are working on. The Beginning and Ending Sounds Instant Learning Centers teach skills that will help the children to decode unknown words as they read. Kindergarten sight words are introduced in the first weeks of school. The Creating Sight Word Center will reinforce the words we are introducing as they use them in sentences. All throughout the year we focus on CVC words, magic "e" words. The children will create CVC and magic "e" words using the magnetic letters kit and the CVC word work center.
These interactive literacy activities will help to build a love of learning for these young learners. The materials I have selected will help to engage my students while teaching and reteaching important literacy skills and encourage them to be independent learners during our literacy block time.
