My seventh grade students crave authentic, relevant reading material that allows for a personal connection from school to home.
Sharon Flake's "The Skin I'm In" explores such issues as colorism, bullying, identity, loss of a parent, young love, and basic humanism. My students will easily connect with these themes throughout the novel and the library pockets will allow for them to collect and reflect on textual evidence and conclusions as they read. This type of tactile organization is hands-on with a reflective component allowing for my students to take the cards out reread, revisit, discuss and reflect on similar themes and patterns within various other texts.
Furthermore, this type of pocket organization will support my students' learning not just within this novel study but with many other complex texts to be read throughout the school year.
I thank you for your consideration in funding this project as I am a 21-year veteran teacher and deeply love the kids I teach!
