These materials will help students in both physical science and chemistry to understand the concepts of energy, electricity, and magnetism by doing science instead of just hearing it. Students will use the zinc and copper to make batteries from potatoes demonstrating the potential energy stored in the dissolved ions in the potato. They will the electricity to run a small dc motor fan and turn on a light bulb showing how the energy can be used and converted to other forms to benefit people. The batteries and wire will be used to demonstrate how electricity can be used to make electromagnets showing how electricity and magnetism can be converted between each other. The kit will be used to create stations to reinforce these ideas and give alternate ways of experiencing the relationship between electricity and magnetism.
One of the big benefits of this project is that all these materials can be used again and again thus having the bonus of not only providing students with engaging experiments but also being efficient and sustainable with our resources. There are a wide variety of projects they can be used for, the metals and carbon in addition to the potato battery can be used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen gas which can be used for energy, electro chemistry, and reactions units. The magnets will be used to demonstrate the nature of magnetism while also being used to generate a current and light a bulb or turn a fan. These projects demonstrate will be used throughout electricity and magnetism unit while also being useful in adjacent units like energy and reactions. My students will appreciate the hands on nature of these labs and gain a better understanding of science.
