When asked, the majority of my students will say that reading is boring, it takes too long, and that the movie is always better. Having access to novels where they can relate to the characters, that haven't been made into movies or haven't been remade in movies in years is the key to correcting this. The intensity that they show as they make connections with the characters is priceless, and their interest in reading begins to build, especially when they realize their is no movie to watch. When there is a movie, after reading the book, they are often disappointed in the way things are left out or presented.
