This year my students participated in the 40 Book Challenge inspired by the book The Book Whisperer by Donalyn Miller. They have worked hard to read as much as they can and in the different genre requirements. This challenge has open up enjoyable adventures, different opinions, and a greater love for reading. This was evident through the discussions between student to teacher(s) as well as peer to peer. Students enjoyed going up in front of the classroom to recommend books to each other. During book frenzies, they walked around discussing their favorite books, characters, and lessons they've learned.
As a result of reaching their goals, we will have a 40 book challenge party. During this party, each student will receive a ticket for every two books they've read. If their ticket gets called then they WIN a book. The student will get be able to choose a book to take home and read over the summer. With your help we'll be able to give them new books they can choose from without it affecting the library choices for the next year students. It is truly heartwarming to see the excitement in our students eyes when they get to choose a book of their own to keep and take home.
