I would like to start by saying how lucky I am to be in the position that I am in! I was originally hired by my current school to be a substitute who covered for some teachers' maternity leaves. In this case, I'd be using the resources in the teachers' classrooms. However, I was recently hired on as a full time, 5th grade teacher. I am very excited, but need your help on making our classroom a comfortable place for these amazing 5th graders!
Our classroom community is in need of a big, comfy rug where the whole class can come together and do their best learning. A lot of instruction is done workshop style, where students come together as a whole class for a mini lesson, before completing independent practice. A rug would provide a space where students can meet together, free of distractions, and collaborate with one another.
The community of fifth grade students that I will be walking, will also be in need of some starter, flexible seating options. Educational research has shown that there is growth in student learning when they have a) freedom and autonomy within a classroom and b) multiple options to find a work space that fits best for them. The bean bag chairs would give our classroom community a great introduction to flexible seating, and provide a new option of workspace for students.
