I want to provide my students with this motivational opportunity to read and become truly excited about books. The March Book Madness inspires students to fall in love with "their" book or books and motivates them to stay actively involved by voting throughout the entire month. Over the last couple years we have been participating in the March Book Madness, an online bracket-style tournament created originally by two teachers in their own classrooms in Ohio. Fortunately for the rest of us, these two teachers shared their brilliant idea on the internet.
Not only does this opportunity impact reading during the month of March, but it motivates students to read prior to voting and sparks interest to read from the list long after the voting has ended. It has been such a success in the past that I am so looking forward to offering this year's sixth grade students the chance to participate. In the past I have purchased the books myself and have never been able to purchase more than one copy of each. Through this project I hope to have three copies of each title so students from each of my three ELA blocks will have the chance to select a book. I have no doubt that given the opportunity, my students this year will fall in love with March Book Madness.
