Many of my students do not attend preschool and have limited experience playing and learning in a structured environment.
Our kindergarten is full day. We have a daily reading and writing workshop, math workshop, and teach science and social studies.
I like to integrate daily opportunities where they have choice in a "play" center in our classroom. The multicultural food and dress up trunks would be used in our kitchen area and dress up area during our designated "choice" time. As my students learn to read and write, small
group instruction is provided to support them. The Phonics, Spelling, and Word Study System by Fountas and Pinnell will be used to support their emerging literacy.
"Play is the work of the child."(Maria Montessori) It is how they make sense of their world. Play provides many opportunities for "talk" as they engage in meaningful social interactions. The multicultural food and dress up clothes will enrich my students center time. My students may choose to speak in their native language or English during our center time depending upon what they feel more comfortable with. As a result , oral language is being developed and that in turn, supports their emerging literacy development!
