Many of our students struggle to focus with the constraining desks often used in the classroom. While these desks tend to help students remain in their seats and complete their assigned work, many of the students in our classroom, some with and some without special needs, are in desperate need of additional seating that allows them to move without being disruptive to the classroom.
The flexible seating options will play a number of roles in our classroom. First, they will provide the five students in our classroom who often struggle to stay focused in the general education curriculum, to move their bodies while they are learning. Secondly, the wobble chairs can be used at our small group tables. We were not provided with sufficient traditional seating for all of the desks, computer desks, and half circle desks in our classrooms. So these can be used for small group settings. Lastly, the cushions will be used during Daily 5 and math centers when students are given more independence (with supervision from teachers and aides in the classroom). Students will have autonomy in reading in different spaces throughout the room and can use the cushions to be more comfortable.
