Last school year, our students were introduced to a Bucket Filler Bullying Prevention program. Students were taught and encouraged to be "bucket fillers" and not "bucket dippers" as described in the book Have You Filled A Bucket Today?. To continue this initiative with a new twist, students in Kindergarten through fifth will be introduced to the book We're All Wonders in a school wide assembly to kick off the Choose Kind Bullying Prevention Program. Each classroom will receive a copy of the book We're All Wonders in grades Kindergarten-2nd and a copy of the book Wonder in grades 3rd-5th. The 3rd-5th graders will have the book Wonder read aloud to them with discussion questions to go along with the book. A copy of each book will be placed in the school library for additional easy access for students and teachers. Students in grades Kindergarten-5th will participate in Choose Kind activities throughout the school year. Parents will be notified of the program via a letter in Take Home Tuesday (how school/community news goes home to parents in our school).
When kind words or acts are "caught" by the teachers and staff, students will receive Choose Kind or Bucket Filler slips to recognize their kindness. Students will learn through the books listed above, Choose Kind activities, the movie Wonder, and other resources already available to the school, ways to be kind and the importance of kindness. Approximately 5-10 of the examples of kindness (as noted on the Choose Kind/Bucket Filler slips that the students bring to the office) will be read aloud on the intercom per week. "Prizes" will be rewarded for kind acts, such as a viewing of the movie Wonder for a school wide or grade level reward or kindness pencils, etc.
