My project is to build a classroom library for my students to have access to a variety of leveled books. I was told that the teacher previous to me might have taken the books they supplied the classroom library with. When I walked into my classroom library there was around 100 books. With a class of 26 students that does not provide students with plenty of options. I have personally selected varied leveled books to allow my students to have more options. Students are more engaged in reading when they are able to connect with characters and have a variety to chose from. I also have selected a few read aloud books that help facilitate difficult conversations or support students social emotional learning.
My school currently does not have a library where my students can access books. This means the only source of books my students will have will be in our classroom. The books selected also have diverse characters where my students can see themselves represented. My classroom currently has a lot of hard learning surfaces. I also included a few items that help with student ergonomics, but also make the library a comfortable space and inviting place.
