A big chunk of the school day in first grade involves reading and learning to read. My first graders and I spend our morning working on things such as: phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency and vocabulary. In the primary grades a big portion of our instruction is given the the students whole group while they are seated on the carpet in close proximity to the teacher. This is where we read big books, discuss new vocabulary and where all of our phonics instruction takes place.
An easel would be so beneficial to my instruction and my students learning. I would use the easel daily for all of my phonics instruction. An easel with a large white board would allow visibility for all my students whether they are sitting in the front row or the back. I would have a built in ledge for my big books so my students would be able to follow along with me. There would also be storage space on the bottom where I can store all the materials I need to instruct such as books, dry erase markers and magnetic letters.
The easel/white board would continue to be used through out the day for mini lessons during math, writing, etc. The students would also be able to use the magnetic letters as an activity during our work shop time.
My students and are are excited to have a new easel that will allow us to work as efficiently as possible through out our very busy day!
