Going into my fourth year of teaching in a high need school, I have learned so much from the students. I have learned first of all that they all have a desire to learn and secondly I have learned that many of them have struggled with math since the 3rd grade, and it is easy for teachers to forget to give students in higher grades the necessary hands on concrete learning that will build fluency in abstract math. I am basing my math design philosophies on researched informed instruction per Marilyn Burns, Jo Boaler, Maria Montessori and other pioneers in hands on learning.
I am convinced through the right materials, students will develop the number sense necessary to advance to proficient levels in math. That is why I am requesting these supplies, to invite others to see a glimpse into my classroom and to give them an invitation to help if they would like to help educate our future generation of leaders.
I have my students in 8 groups of 4 and am wanting to buy group sets for each of the materials I am requesting, plus an extra two, one for me and demonstration and another extra in case one gets accidentally damaged through use. Ideally, I would buy enough for partner's, but I will increase the order next year with materials that help students learn the most. Also, to note these materials are meant for my most struggling students, the ones who have not made the necessary concrete connections to understand abstract math. Thanks for your help and let me know if you have any questions on how I am going to use any of the materials or any other question you may have!
