My kids need interesting leveled books for guided reading groups. I chose particular selections based on proven student interest such as Where The Red Fern Grow, Out of My Mind, and Lucky Strike. Students this age are interested in more complex, real life situations and learn to develop empathy as a result. Many of the dilemmas presented in these stories capture the readers' emotions so much, that you have no choice but to persevere. We all know that wonderful feeling of desiring to read when you have uncovered a book that speaks to your soul! That's what I hope to accomplish every year in my students.
Fuzzy Mud by Louis Sachar was a HUGE hit last year!
I read this novel as a read aloud to my class. They never wanted to stop the reading sessions. We had tremendous discussions about the unfolding events and the morals people choose to follow as well as their ramifications. They developed a true LOVE for reading!
