I would like to bring newer novel studies to our classroom to show my students the world around them. Our novels are old and falling apart, not to mention hard for students to relate to.
We are hoping to add books like The One and Only Ivan by Kathrine Applegate to allow us to look at issues such as animal rights and characters development. We would also like to study the novel The Wild Robot by Peter Brown that discusses the idea of adaptation.
This grant will fund four classroom sets of 19 books each. They will be used by two sections of our six grade class. Each novel has been selected to fit a part of our sixth grade standards. One of the ways we will use the novels to dig deeper into the story is to do a Google Lit. Trip with the novel A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. We also plan to connect with other local classrooms to discuss the novels.
