Gone are the days where everything was hand-written and paper-based. With technological advancements, evaluating, progress monitoring, and therapy for students is going paperless. Although there are cons to going paperless, there are also several advantages. Evaluating students electronically (through apps only available to apple products) allows for less materials and easier access to materials, faster testing time, and computer generated reports and calculations of scores with various displays of data (graphs, charts etc), and goals. By decreasing testing and report-writing time, more students are able to be evaluated throughout the year, which supports early intervention!
Not being able to speak is not the same as having nothing to say. Luckily, there are several apple-based apps that target speech sounds and expressive/receptive language skills, and automatically collect data, generate reports, and document overall growth towards the child's goals. Busy-Bee Articulation, for example, allows students to record themselves producing various words with target speech sounds and compare their productions to a standard production. Auditory feedback is proven to improve productions of speech sounds. Proloquo2go, is a symbol-based apple-app that helps users learn how to express themselves through pictures when they are unable to communicate verbally. Without ipads specifically, these children will not reap the benefits of electronic testing and of all apple-based apps like these two.
