My classroom library currently consists of hand-me-downs and thrift store finds for independent reading and a collection of higher interest graphic novels that I have purchased myself and keep separate for group instruction.
This project would allow me to have more engaging options available for my students to access and explore on their own. It will also revitalize my collection of higher level graphic books for group instruction.
My students with cognitive disabilities have many of the same interests as their peers but are reading at a significantly lower level. They are bright enough to notice when a book that might be at their academic level is geared toward much younger children. I have been thrilled by the increase in leveled reader books featuring their favorite characters from superhero movies. Even my reluctant readers can’t help but get excited looking through a real book with characters they know and words they can read.
