My students are freshman in a relatively destitute urban environment. Some of them are voracious readers, while others (I find) reserve this past-time for school only. Active reading, I fear, is not a virtue that has been impressed upon them or instilled in them firmly in the past; I seek to change that with this project. And as these freshman are new to high school (and are still functioning under the mindset of middle school expectations and academic rigor) I want to usher them into high school level literary analysis in the most entertaining way possible: with contemporary, pop-culture literature. I feel (given my own experiences at that age and my own introduction to literature via Mr. King) that the student response will be immediate and impressive.
