The poster boards, drawing paper, and permanent markers will get us through 3 projects: jigsawed Native American research project and presentation, lost colony of Roanoke comic strip, and "break-up letter to King George III" Declaration of Independence assignment. The ink for the class printer will allow students to print out beautiful images to paste on their Native American presentations, etc. The colored pencils/markers/glue sticks/rulers will be used for the projects mentioned above, as well as for sundry other activities over the year. The clipboards are so helpful for collaborative work, as they allow students to sit on the floor, the couch, the reading rug, etc. When working in small groups, I find that allowing students to sit in places other than their desks while working makes them happy due to the mere absence of physical restriction. The clipboards will also be used for Gallery Walks and other activities that require students to be out of their desks. The folders are for homework and "in progress" work.
In sum, these basic materials will provide more opportunities for my students to get out of their seats, to engage with one another, and to create physical products to be presented by the students and displayed in our room. We are so fortunate to have a class set of Chromebooks, but I like my students to disconnect from technology and use hard copies of primary/secondary sources to co-construct learning, as well. Given our diverse population and high levels of English Language Learners, these types of activities-- those that promote dialogue, collaboration, and blended learning-- are so valuable. I also find that displaying students' work fosters pride and enhances classroom culture, and these materials will help me to accomplish buy-in and cohesion.
